Cosplay is not Consent: Preventing the Objectification of Female Cosplayers from a Male Perspective
A well-understood issue that has reached a head in popular media is the objectification and assumptions made about female cosplayers in the video game/anime community. Is cosplaying a sexy character for attention or empowerment? What messages are being sent and, most importantly, how are these messages being perceived? We will dissect assumptions and provide a psychological and philosophical rationalization for the disconnect between expectation and realization between sexes from the persective of the all-too-often aggressor, the male.

Origins and Avatars: Identifying with Heroes
At this year's queer panel we will be discussing the childhood and adolescent relationships our panelist's had with their favorite fictional characters from fantasy, sci-fi, anime, video games, and more. We'll explore how and why these particular characters were important to them. What attributes drew them toward these characters, and why these particular characters spoke to them over others. Now as adults we'll attempt to unpack the significance of these relationships looking back through a queer lens.

Nerdlesque is fantastical alchemy combining burlesque and sexy, brave, beautiful nerds of all shapes, sexes and sizes. Phasers replace feather boas and D20s replace pastie tassels in this new and exciting trend of modern burlesque. As nerd culture merges with the mainstream, nerdlesque too is evolving the art of burlesque. Imagine a lady Spock doing a striptease. Across the world, performers are creating genre-defining acts: some serious, most sexy and fun. These acts harken back to the history of burlesque while also tickling our modern-day geek fantasies. This panel is a powerpoint presentation exploring the history and significance of this new mode of performing fandom. Presented by Jo Jo Stiletto, the Professor of Nerdlesque and author of the upcoming book Nerdlesque: The New Burlesque.

Shirokuma Café revolves around a Canadian white bear that quits his boring job and starts a cafeteria near a zoo. He loves telling tall tales and always brags about himself. According to him, he was picked up by a human couple who owns a diner while he was drifting around on an iceberg.
Though he has lost all contact with his Canadian family, he has discovered a new home in serving the diners' clientele, thanks to the kind couple. His café is an embodiment of his personality. The place is always packed with many regulars, animals and humans, who are drawn by his charismatic magnetism.

Movie Screening; Browncoats: Redemption
Browncoats: Redemption takes place three months after the signal is sent out regarding the events on Miranda. Captain Laura Mathews and the crew of Redemption are unintentionally thrown into a situation that some view as the potential catalyst for the second unified rise of the Independents against the Alliance, since Unification Day. The Alliance is looking for a scapegoat for Miranda, while those unhappy with the Alliance are looking for a rallying cry to take action. Through all this, a secret about Laura is exposed that shakes to the very core of the crew, threatening to break it up, challenge the trust that she's earned with the Browncoats, and undo all the efforts she has put into place to keep a sense of peace in her life since the Unification War.

Be there as Portland's newest podcast launches with a live recording of Episode #1 of Monster Kid Radio! For 5+ years, podcaster Derek M. Koch has produced podcasts devoted to zombie movies/media (Mail Order Zombie, 2008-2013) and Hammer Films (1951 Down Place, 2011-current), and now he's launching a new podcast devoted to the fandom and appreciation of fantasy, sci-fi, and horror movies of the 30s-60s/70s. In the first episode of Monster Kid Radio, Derek is joined by local writer/blogger Chris McMillan from The Shadow Over Portland to talk about some of their favorite classic monster movies. Everyone loves cosplaying. Everyone loves getting their picture taken. And everyone spends the night before con working on costumes because they procrastinated until the very last second. Why not show off these mad skills in a little contest? Contestants will be split into teams and have one hour to make a costume of their choice with supplies given. Winners will be chosen based off character likeness, creativity, practicality and teamwork.

If you're an artist looking to expand into print, or just someone interested in putting together a zine, this panel is for you! This talk will cover everything from planning to execution, as well as the good, bad, and ugly of self-publishing! Organizing and printing your first book can be a lot of work, but this panel will be an invaluable source of information for inexperienced self-publishers. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions, so bring your best ideas and come prepared to learn something!
